In this chapter, Odysseus meets his swineherd as Athene foretold him. His swineherd Eumaeus does not recognize Odysseus but is kind to him and offers him the best food he has and shelter. Eumaeus believes that Odysseus is a stranger and an old man who has falling on hard times. He shares with the stranger, his despair over the Suitors who bother Penelope and Telemashus. He also shares his sorrow over the presumed death of his master. The "stranger" tells him a tale about his difficult journies after a surprise attack against Troy. He promises Eumaeus that his master will return, and he makes a bargain that if Odysseus returns, he will give him a cloak and a tunic; and if he does not return Eumaeus can throw him over a precipice. Finally, Odyesseus if touched by his servents care and concern for his absent masters property.
